Ivana and Marko had recently married and moved into their first home together. Although both had grown up in Orthodox families, they had never before created their own spiritual space. They felt the need to make their new home not only beautiful but also spiritually fulfilling — a place of peace and protection.
One evening, while sitting at the kitchen table, Marko said to Ivana, “I think something is missing, something that would make this house truly ours.” Ivana agreed, and they decided to explore which spiritual items they should have in their home to feel God’s presence and blessing.
Their search began in a small religious shop not far from their apartment. As soon as they stepped inside, they were welcomed by a peaceful atmosphere, filled with the scent of incense and wax. A kind shop assistant approached them and asked how she could help.
“We are looking for something that will make our home spiritually richer,” Ivana said. The shop assistant smiled and began to show them the items that every Orthodox home should have.
First, she showed them an icon, explaining, “The icon is the heart of every Orthodox home. It symbolizes the presence of God and the saints, bringing peace and protection into your daily life.” Ivana and Marko chose a beautiful icon of Saint Nicholas, the protector of their families.
Next, she showed them a vigil lamp, saying, “The vigil lamp is the light of faith that symbolizes God’s presence. By lighting it, you bring peace, warmth, and God’s blessing into your home.” Ivana immediately imagined how the flame of the lamp would illuminate their living room every evening.
The shop assistant then presented a small bottle of holy water, explaining its importance: “Holy water is a powerful spiritual remedy that sanctifies the space and cleanses it from negativity. Regularly sprinkling your home with holy water preserves the spiritual purity of your living space.” Marko felt a deep connection to this practice, and they immediately decided to bring holy water into their home.
The fourth item she showed them was a cross, the symbol of faith and protection from all evil. “A cross placed in the home brings special protection and reminds the household of Christ’s sacrifice and love,” the shop assistant said. Ivana and Marko chose a simple but elegant wooden cross.
Finally, the shop assistant offered them a prayer book: “The prayer book is a guide for spiritual life. It will help you stay connected with God every day through prayer.”
They returned home with all five items, feeling a new sense of joy and meaning. Together they arranged a special corner in their living room — a small altar with the icon of Saint Nicholas, the vigil lamp, the cross, holy water, and the prayer book. Every evening they lit the vigil lamp, prayed together, and sprinkled their home with holy water.
Soon, their house was no longer just a place to live, but a place of spiritual gathering, peace, and unity. Their friends and family often commented on how pleasant it felt when they visited, sensing a special peace and spiritual strength in their home.
Through this process, Ivana and Marko realized that a true home is not just a beautifully arranged space, but a place filled with God’s presence, love, and spiritual blessing, making it truly special and worth living in.
